Best Months to Catch Fish at Waterfall Resort, Alaska
Waterfall Resort is known for its world-class fishing, with a variety of species peaking at different times of the season. Here’s a guide on the best months to catch each fish, along with some fun facts to enhance your fishing adventure.
1. King Salmon (Chinook)
- Best Months: Mid-May to early August, peak is usually in June.
- King Salmon are the largest of all Pacific salmon, with some weighing over 50 pounds! They are known for their powerful fights and can live up to 8 years, which allows them to grow to impressive sizes.
2. Silver Salmon (Coho)
- Best Months: Early July through September, peak is usually mid-July.
- Coho are renowned for their aerial acrobatics when hooked, leaping out of the water to try and shake the line. These aggressive fighters are a favorite for sport fishers and can weigh up to 20 pounds. Their vibrant, silver hue gives them their name.
3. Halibut
- Best Months: June through September.
- Halibut are flatfish with both eyes on one side of their body, allowing them to blend perfectly into the ocean floor. The largest halibut ever caught in Alaska weighed over 500 pounds! These fish can also live up to 50 years, giving them plenty of time to reach gigantic sizes.
4. Lingcod
- Best Months: Available throughout the summer.
- Despite their name, Lingcod are not true cod—they are actually a member of the greenling family. Known for their large mouths filled with sharp teeth, they are ferocious predators. Lingcod can change color to better blend into their surroundings and can weigh over 80 pounds!
5. Rockfish
- Best Months: All summer long.
- Rockfish are one of the longest-living fish species, with some individuals documented to live over 100 years! These vibrant fish come in a variety of colors and patterns, making them a visually striking catch. Pelagic rockfish tend to school, so where there’s one, there’s often many.
